The Droid and hands-free voice dialing

(Credit:Josh Miller/CNET)

Shortly after we posted our Motorola Droid review, we received quite a few e-mails from CNET readers who were concerned about the phone’s inability to support hands-free voice commands and dialing. indeed, the readers were correct and Motorola’s support forums continue to buzz with user complaints regarding the issue.

As part of our original Droid review we did not test whether the handset supported hands-free voice dialing. We apologize for that, but we’ve now updated the review to reflect our findings.

Below is the passage from the review:

Unfortunately, the Droid does not support Bluetooth voice dialing or commands. in order to use the Voice Dialer feature, you first must select the icon from the main menu (you can move on a shortcut to the home screen). after speaking your command, you then must confirm it via a prompt on the touch screen. Though we found the voice dialing feature to be quite accurate–it successfully picked up a command when we were a few feet away–it is not an ideal scenario for people who need to completely hands-free. We hope this omission is corrected in a future software update.

In the future, we will report on hands-free voice dialing in our smartphone reviews. as more state and local areas pass laws mandating hands-free driving, such capability will only grow more important.

Book review: Lost Voices From The Titanic – The Definitive Oral History

This new book about the world’s most famous shipwreck confirms unpleasant truths about the 1912 tragedy.

Nick Barratt focuses almost entirely on the words of those who designed and built the ship, and on accounts from passengers who survived the sinking.

The material from the survivors is riveting, although the first part of the book is too heavily laden with statistical material.

Believed to be “practically unsinkable”, Titanic sank on her maiden voyage within a few hours of scraping an iceberg in the north Atlantic. there were insufficient lifeboats and only 706 of the 2,223 people on-board survived.

Contrary to “stiff upper lip” legend about Titanic, there was hysteria on board once it was realised the ship was doomed and there were no more lifeboats. the captain, whose carelessness caused the disaster, made no effort to save himself.

Voice of the Day Blunt confirms points in article

(2 of 2)

In another June interview with the Kansas City Star Advisory Panel, Blunt said “he was very satisfied with his health care.” Member George Harris wrote a follow up reporting Blunt has “the finest health care insurance money can buy.” Praising his gold standard government benefits, Blunt claimed anyone can buy private health insurance like his for $500 or $600 a month ($6,000-$7,000 annually per person). again, his understanding of the issues is questionable. Millions are denied insurance, for example, regardless of ability to pay due to pre-existing conditions.

The new bill, “Affordable Health Care for America Act,” remedies that, too.

Finally, while Blunt announces my past honor to serve in the election process as if it disqualifies the truth about his contradictory statements and record, past posts are not the issue. This is about accountability and moving forward a health plan that the majority of Americans demand and deserve, and which the prestigious American Medical Association, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, and American Association of Retired Persons all publicly endorse.

Thankfully the century-long mandate to pass reform so more people can obtain medical care in the U.S.’s great medical system passed Congress despite Blunt’s misrepresentation and vote against it.

JOE'S voice needs the least help to sound fantastic.

This week, X Factor twins John and Edward were at the centre of “fix” claims, amid reports that the show’s sound mixers have been ordered to mask their weak vocals.

The Irish 18-year-olds – whose lack of singing talent has sparked criticism of the ITV1 show – received some of their highest praise from judges after their rendition of Queen’s under Pressure last Saturday night.

But according to a national newspaper, technicians were ordered to lower the levels on their microphones, so their voices were drowned out by a pre-recorded backing track.

Show chiefs responded to the allegations by saying all the contestants had “technical support”.

The newspaper quoted a programme source who claimed: “Every week, session singers record backing tracks to some songs.

“But soundmen are told to turn down the levels of the twins’ mics so their vocals are mostly covered by the backing singers.

“Often, mics are so low the twins’ singing would be barely audible.”

But the source said Joe rarely needed technical help because “the boy can truly sing”.

However, a spokeswoman for production company talkbackThames said all X Factor hopefuls receive an “equal amount” of technical help for their live performances.

Vail Valley Voices: Proud to be American

as an American Muslim, I am deeply heartbroken over the shooting that took place at Fort Hood. I condemn the attack, and I am proud of all of the American Muslim organizations that have condemned this tragic shooting. I am also deeply proud of the 15,000 to 20,000 American Muslims who are serving in our armed services.

My heart particularly breaks over the fact that this shooting was done against our American brothers and sisters who were preparing to deploy with our armed services.

I have been to the Muslim world since the war on terror started and seen the contributions of our armed forces firsthand. I am convinced that America is not fighting the Muslim world but rather liberating it.

Many Muslims around the world are held hostage to irrational dictators or terrible tribal customs that are the root causes of civil war, strife and poverty within the Muslim world. any notion that the world’s Muslims welcome such strife is completely wrong.

Polling from the group Terror Free Tomorrow confirms that the Muslim World is against al-Qaida and Osama Bin Laden.

After all, the mass majority of al-Qaida’s victims are Muslims, as al-Qaida suicide missions most frequently take place in Islamic countries such as Pakistan, Indonesia and Iraq.

And yes, American actions are not always executed perfectly. yet I forever remain touched, as a Muslim, that our America is steadfast in its nobility to take on this fight against al-Qaida, not just for the sake of protecting American freedoms but also for the sake of liberating Muslims across the world.

Lastly, I do not fear an American backlash against Muslims. Nor do I fear any regressions in American relationships with Muslim communities.

Zogby International and Cornell University did extensive studies on Muslims in America in the 2000s. Both studies concluded that as a demographic, American Muslims boast tremendously high levels of education and wealth. More importantly, these positive trends are rising, proving that America is, indeed, a country where Muslims will find their best opportunities, not backlashes.

In closing, I speak for the American Muslim population when I say that we do not consider ourselves Saudi Arabians, Pakistanis, Iranians or Egyptians — we are Americans! and we are proud to be American.

Please let it be known that American Muslims stand with everyone in condemning the tragic shooting at Fort Hood and that we will be working to make sure that similar attacks never happen again.
