Salvation Army helps those in need this Thanksgiving

Published Wednesday, November 25, 2009

Many families were out grocery shopping early this week with Thanksgiving recipes in hand.

The Salvation Army offered a similar opportunity to 408 families Tuesday — sending them home with free turkeys and a few fixings for Thursday’s holiday feast.

“The need is really up, and we are happy to be able to offer this service,” said organizer Lori Blanton, a Salvation Army case worker.

Blanton said there were 379 applications for Thanksgiving baskets last year. Up until last year, the Salvation Army averaged 250 baskets a year, she said.

“Churches had drives, and the community really helped. The Salvation Army did purchase some turkeys too to meet the 408 needed,” Blanton said.

Everyone who filled out an application received a turkey, and was able to pick out their own sides. Stuffing mix, canned vegetables, pie filling, corn muffin mix, sweet potatoes, squash and Jell-O mix were among the offerings.

The University of Minnesota extension office had a table set up in the food bank to offer food safety tips too.

With 100 turkeys left to give out, the Salvation Army was low on several items and out of a few things.

Blanton said everyone would go home with at least a turkey and a few cans of vegetables.

One of many volunteers Tuesday was Blanton’s 12-year-old son Caleb Middleton and his friend Sam Weis, 12.

“I helped sort out food, and it was a lot of fun,” Weis said.

“It feels good to help out others,” Middleton said.

He continued, “It is a responsibility for me too, to try to make sure that everyone can have a happy Thanksgiving… It’s kind of what it’s all about.”

The Salvation Army also serves a free Thanksgiving meal Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. there is also free meal delivery for Austin residents who cannot leave their homes. Contact the Salvation army to sign up for delivery at 433-6211.

The organization will also offer Christmas Baskets in conjunction with HyVee’s Feed A Family program. Applications for Christmas Baskets are due Dec. 10, and they can be filled out at the Salvation Army Food Bank, 209 Fourth St. NE.

Thanksgiving feasts planned

Preparations are in high gear for the Trinity Episcopal Church Thanksgiving Day Outreach Thursday.

The meal will be served from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Trinity’s All Saints Parish Hall, 106 North Grove St. in downtown Marshall.

Trinity Episcopal Church began the Thanksgiving Day Outreach 18 years ago and it has evolved into a tradition. through the years, the community meal has become a collaborative effort by local churches and community volunteers. other churches who participate with Trinity Episcopal are St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, first Baptist Church, first United Methodist Church and Central Baptist Church.

Last year, more than 900 meals were prepared, served or delivered in the community on Thanksgiving.

The Thanksgiving Day Outreach was designed to provide meals and fellowship for those who may be in need on this special holiday.

In addition to the elderly, sick or others who may not be able to leave their homes, the outreach delivers meals within the city limits to Marshall Meals on Wheels participants, East Texas Open Door, 12-Way Foundation, Choices, Willoughby, the Harrison County Jail, as well as to members of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, Marshall Police Department and Marshall fire Department who have to work on Thanksgiving Day.

Father John Himes, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, says that the meal is a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all of the trimmings.

“We invite members of our community to join us for food and fellowship or to volunteer to help. It’s a wonderful way to say thank you on this special day focused on the appreciation of our many blessings,” he said.

The deadline is today to request a delivered meal. Call Bonnie Somerford at 903-938-4246 by 5 p.m.

Christina Anderson, co-chair of this year’s Thanksgiving Day Outreach committee with husband Richard Anderson, notes, “The Thanksgiving Day Outreach is indeed a joyful collaboration of church families and community volunteers. A huge and heartfelt thank you to all from Trinity Episcopal as well as St. Joseph’s, first Methodist, first Baptist, Central Baptist, the Knights of Columbus, and other volunteers who never miss an opportunity to step up and say, ‘How can I help?’ whether it’s cooking a turkey or serving or delivering meals or scrubbing pots, Trinity Church appreciates the kindness of all who have contributed and volunteered this year and in years past.”

For Macy's parade guru, it's Thanksgiving all year

HOBOKEN, N.J. — the scene around him in a vast industrial space looks like Santa’s Workshop, but John Piper, the man behind Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, compares organizing the annual extravaganza to planning a huge holiday meal — with a lot of trimmings.

He needs to serve up something for the traditionalists as well as those seeking a little variety; he needs to include old friends and invite new ones to the party. This year Santa Claus gets his first new float in 40 years and the new balloons are Sailor Mickey, the parade’s fourth incarnation of Mickey Mouse, Spider-Man, Ronald McDonald and the Pillsbury Doughboy.

It’s the second version of Spider-Man that will fly through the streets of New York on Thanksgiving Day and the third Ronald, this one with enormous feet on speed skates that posed Piper with more than a few technical challenges.

Sometimes Piper invites for a return engagement a balloon character or a float theme that had taken a break but might click with a new audience, he explains. Snoopy has been the most popular character over the years, boasting six different versions.

Personally, Piper would like to bring back Underdog but there hasn’t been an occasion for that — at least not yet. still, he can’t pick a favorite even if it seems like everyone else can. “I love them all. if I had my way, we’d have a parade every week and fly them all.”

He adds: “The thing that surprises me about all of them (the balloons) is that everyone has their own favorite. back to the meal, everyone likes the whole dinner but everyone has a favorite dish.”

Popularity isn’t the only factor in keeping or losing a balloon, says Piper, as some are retired because they’re no longer fit to fly and there are corporate partnerships to be considered.

There also are the parade’s old standbys, like the clowns and the marching bands, that Piper compares to the brown-and-serve rolls on the table that everyone loves — and the meal wouldn’t be complete without — but aren’t the headline-grabbers.

The only litmus test for any of the elements is that it can bring a smile to someone’s face, says Piper. “We talk about the parade as being fun for children, but we’re not talking children by stature. There’s a child in everyone and we want them to have a good time.”

“We’ve taken on the role of gatekeeper to the holiday,” he says.

The Macy’s parade tradition started in 1924 and took a break only during World War II. (The balloons actually were dismantled and the materials used in the war effort as the light aircraft called dirigibles.)

Then and now, it’s the retailer’s employees and their friends and family members that put on the bulk of the show, including the balloon handlers who, in the offseason, practice special training flights. the only requirements are that handlers are at least 18 years old and weigh 125 pounds or more.

The balloons start as a pencil sketch and then are turned into a full-color rendering. those are turned into three-dimensional designs built on a 1:24 scale using a steel frame covered with clay. That’s the last chance to make any changes, Piper explains.

Approved designs are then poured into silicon molds, hardened and then those molds are emptied to become negative-space models; there are always two — one kept white with all the technical drawings marked with inflation and deflation points, and weight and balance notes, and the other is a color version so everyone will know what the balloon will actually look like. It’s a nine-month process, according to Piper, who boasts that in his 29 years working on the parade, he’s never not had one fly although the square SpongeBob Squarepants and gangly Kermit the Frog were touch-and-go for a while.

After the parade each year, the balloons, floats and assorted accessories head back through the Lincoln Tunnel to the former Tootsie Roll factory that acts as parade central. Deflated balloons are stowed in colorful bags, ranging in size from a jumbo load of laundry to a king bed.

Piper and his team gather the day after Thanksgiving at the studio for their own feast. He’ll watch a recorded version of the parade on TV — and then start thinking about the next year.

“It’s always on its way to Thanksgiving for me. It’s the first and last day of the year,” Piper says.
