MARCUS (Christopher Heyerdahl) Aro’s right-hand man who “sees” the relationships between people and therefore their weaknesses.

DEMETRI (Charlie Bewley) a vampire with unparalleled tracking abilities to find anyone he is ordered to locate.

LAURENT (Edi Gathegi) may have tried the “vegetarian” lifestyle but he soon proves he’s back to his old bloodthirsty ways when he pounces on Bella in the meadow. with Edward AWOL, Bella is left defenceless as Laurent moves in for the kill. Who will save Bella now?

VICTORIA (Rachelle LeFevre) is feeling murderous after Edward killed her “mate” James at the end of Twilight. She plans to kill Bella – a mate for a mate – in a slow and torturous fashion, if she can just get past the werewolves…

Michael Sheen: Interview with 'New Moon' star on fitting in with the cast

Michael Sheen is best known for his roles as Tony Blair in The Queen and David Frost in Frost/Nixon. so it was a bit of a surprise that this serious actor, with a great ability to transform completely into real-life characters, would want a role in the frothy Twilight series. EW.com chatted with Sheen about his New Moon experience.

What made you want to sign on to this project?
I knew about the whole Twilight thing, primarily through my daughter, who’s 11 and is a big fan of the books. She’s read the books many, many times. And I knew how much people got into them. These weren’t just books you read. she was really into it. that was my introduction to it. I read the scripts and the book myself and saw the first film. And I thought it was a wonderful story and a great character. And then [director] Chris Weitz sent me a really lovely letter. it was a terrific thing to get involved with.

What was your daughter’s reaction to your playing Aro?
It was a whole mixture of things. she was very excited to think I was going to be a part of this, but she also thought her father was taking over something that was hers. But she got over that pretty quickly and was in the end just excited about going to the premiere really.

That’s what it all boiled down to, her chance to meet Robert Pattinson?
Yes, but actually her favorite is Ashley Greene.

Ashley spoke very highly of her time working with you.
She’s lovely. They all were very nice but they kind of treated me like an elderly uncle. They were all on their best behavior when they are around me. I just want to be down with the kids but that doesn’t really work out to well.

You have great command of the scene with the Volturi and you can tell that those other actors had great respect for you.
It helps coming into something where they all know each other and have already done one movie together. They’ve also been involved in the whole phenomenon together so I think they’ve bonded a lot. so when you’re coming in to do a big scene like the one we did in the film, it helps if the character you are playing is higher status than the other ones. at least it gives you a bit more confidence. so that certainly helped.

What do you think audiences are responding to with Twilight?
I think it’s a whole combination of things coming together. especially for adolescent girls and also for older audiences, Stephenie [Meyer] takes the incredibly powerful experiences you have as a teenager and treats them absolutely fearlessly and gives them the respect they deserve. the first book and film are about the first time you fall in love. And New Moon is all about the first time your heart is broken. These are some of the most powerful experiences you can have in your life, regardless of your age. And there is a tendency to kind of trivialize those things as you get older, to kind of be patronizing about those things. And Stephenie treats them absolutely seriously. she also, very cleverly in a way, said that the vampires are stunningly gorgeous as a way to lure their prey. That’s very clever because in casting the film you have very beautiful people who are very good as well.

Ashley Greene: Interview with 'New Moon's' Alice Cullen

Nothing like a role in Twilight to break you into show business. That’s the case for Ashley Greene, who had spent most of her time in Hollywood as a hostess in an L.a. restaurant prior to her fame-making role as Alice Cullen. The Floridian native just finishing touring the country in support of New Moon and she’ll start filming the horror film Apparition in Berlin in February. We chatted with Greene days before New Moon started breaking records.

Are the reactions to Twilight the same all around the country?

I was impressed in Chicago, actually. Chicago was really, really intense and loud and I think it was one of the bigger responses that we had. but there’s always a lot of people, a lot of passion, a lot of screaming, a lot of crying. so really it’s all measured in terms of how deep the screaming goes.

Was it much different than last year?

I guess it’s more intense. I’m much more comfortable with this whole thing. I didn’t really know what to expect at all when I first got into it. it was my first gig, and so it was a little crazy and I was really nervous. and so now you know the fans are there because they love you and they support you.

What was your most memorable fan encounter?

I’ve had a couple people make me scrapbooks, and that’s kind of an incredible thing because I’m in a midst of this whirlwind right now so there are a lot of things that I miss because we’re in this Twilight bubble and it’s just go go go. so probably a year after this is all done, we can sit back and look at the scope of it. so it’s nice for them to put a collection of my career and what I’ve been going through together. That’s really special.

Why do you think fans are so obsessed?

I think with vampires, you can’t really go wrong. for generations, vampires have been a hit because they’re unobtainable, mysterious, sensual, dangerous, kind of sexy. Then Stephanie Meyer added a Romeo-and-Juliet love story to this fantasy world. Edward happens to be a vampire but he’s very much that gentleman who opens doors and says everything a girl wants to hear and he’s basically the epitome of perfection. and then you have Bella, this normal, everyday girl, which a lot of us are, and she steals this vampire’s heart. so everyone wants their Edward and everyone wants to be Bella.

How has playing Alice Cullen changed your career?

I didn’t really have a career! so that’s how it changed. but now I’m doing what I want and I know I’m going to continue to work. This is it; this is the rest of my life. I can walk into rooms and talk to directors and producers that I couldn’t get into their doors before. and I can actually sit down and speak to them like a human being and not be terrified of them. That, and of course, the fact that people care what kind of coffee I drink and who I’m dating and where I’m going. nobody knew my name before and nobody cared and then all of a sudden in a course of a year, everything has changed.

And what is the downside?

The only downside is when people stop realizing you are human and you’re not perfect. but it’s part of the territory and I wouldn’t trade it.

What was your first reaction to New Moon?

The tone, the color schemes, and the warmth of it is beautiful. I think [director] Chris Weitz did a really fantastic job. and then after seeing Taylor [Lautner], I was really impressed. I mean, he’s a 17-year-old kid and he committed and gained 30 pounds and transformed into a completely different person than he was in the first one. He carried this film, and I think that’s a hard thing to do, especially when you’re up against this character Edward. It’s a lot to live up to, and I think he did it justice and he did a fantastic job.

What was your favorite scene to film?

Going to Italy and being part of the Volturi scene was great. Dakota Fanning is fantastic. I was watching her movies before I was even acting. and I got to work with Michael Sheen and he’s an incredible, phenomenal actor and it was great to be able to learn from him and watch him do the scene and watch how it translates to the screen.

He gives that scene a lot of gravitas.

It was so easy for him. He controls the scene. I haven’t worked with an actor of that caliber yet who can do something like that. it was really cool to see.

Who’s your closest friend in the cast?

Kellan Lutz. We’ve been friends for about five years, before this whole Twilight thing even happened. We had the same agent starting out so we’ve basically been friends since we both moved to L.a. We’re together 12 hours a day, every day for like three months at a time.

Is there a role out there you’d really like to play?

I would have loved to do Alice in Wonderland. being a Bond girl would always be fun. We had a lot of action in Eclipse and I’d definitely like to continue down the action road. I want to do a romantic period piece, but those are really hard to get made because they’re very expensive and there’s not a huge demographic. and far, far down the road, probably when I’m in my 30s, I would love to play a North Country/Erin Brockovich type of a role like Charlize [Theron] and Julia Roberts did because they’re inspirational and they’re about very strong women that changed basically the course of history. That would be a really fun role to play, they really affect people. That’s one of the bigger benefits of acting, that you get to affect people.

If you could pick the director to helm Breaking Dawn, who would it be?

I just went to MoMA [NYC's Museum of Modern Art] and they were honoring Tim Burton, and I saw a whole compilation of his films and artwork and I just think he’s an extraordinary artist. I think it’d be really cool to have his spin on it, because it’s a very odd book, there’s some very weird moments. He would actually put a really weird and cool twist on it. and if we could do it the right way, it’d be great to have two films. you definitely want to get all the important parts in there and you know how hardcore and passionate the fans are about it, so one might be difficult and there would be something left out. so if we could do it right, it’d be great to have two films.

Taylor Lautner talks 'New Moon', the fans with George Lopez on 'Lopez Tonight …

The star of ‘The Twilight Saga: new Moon’ Taylor Lautner stopped by the new George Lopez show, ‘Lopez Tonight,’ to promote the film. George Lopez has known Taylor Lautner since he was twelve years old.

George Lopez asked Taylor Launter, how this success has all come about, and Lautner replies, “I was not expecting anything this. It was a normal audition – I met with the director, I read with Kristen [Stewart], and a year and a half later, I’m in this, with these amazing fans. It’s incredible.”

Lopez then says that he has known Lautner since he was 12, and says, “I can’t tell you – everyday, how much I thank God that I was nice to you at age 12.”

Extra security was brought in for Taylor Lautner, and George Lopez says, “We had to get extra security for you today. It has been chaos. People are bringing kids they didn’t even know they had. but it’s like this everywhere – this is like a global movie – it’s like this everywhere, Right?.” Taylor Launter explains, “Yeah, it’s unbelievable. I mean, you know, they’re not going to hurt me.”

He says of playing Jacob Black in New Moon, “It’s a lot different than it was in Twilight. Obviously, I have a lot more to do. It is a lot more challenging because basically I’m playing a split personality. I have to bring alive the old side of Jacob, but also the new side which is more fierce and intense.

Doom and gloom give vroom to 'New Moon' OST

‘The Twilight Saga: new Moon Soundtrack,’ various Original Artists, Warner Music

Listening to this album is like sinking your teeth into a meal of melancholy music sprinkled with doom and gloom.

The strange story about a love triangle between a vampire, a human and a werewolf naturally calls for a soundtrack that is equal parts of different musical genres namely alternative rock, emo and gothic. And here, dinner is served.

Many of the songs in this OST are best appreciated in the context of the film. These include Lykke Li’s droning “Possibility,” Anya Marina’s whispery “Satellite Heart,” Bon Iver & St. Vincent’s ambient “Roslyn,” Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s menacing “Done All Wrong” and the Editor’s cheerless “No Sound but the Wind,” all of which give aural oomph to the scenes (mostly showing a wan-faced Bella contemplating life without the perpetually morose teen vampire Edward Cullen) they were used for.

Other hot spots in the “New Moon” CD: Muse’s lyrically fit-for-the-movie “I Belong To you,” (”I can’t find the words to say, they’re overdue, I’ve traveled half the world to say ‘I belong to you’”), ok Go’s bare bones rendering of “Shooting the Moon,” Hurricane Bells’ hurdy-gurdy “Monsters,” and Sea Wolf’s head-bobbing “Violent Hour.”

If the “New Moon” soundtrack is a glimpse of things to come in the next “Twilight” movie and album, then by all means, Edward, BITE BELLA, QUICK!

* * *
‘Hot Mess,’ Cobra Starship, Warner Music

It’s easy to dismiss this group as a one-dimensional, Leighton Meester-flaunting, pop and dance act if the impression is based on their first hit song, “Good Girls gone bad.”

Further listen to “Hot Mess,” however, refutes this. sure, their songs are synth-heavy and some remind one a tad much of cringe-inducing ’80s pop, but there’s no denying that they craft songs that are just all too darn catchy. “The Scene Is Dead, Long Live the Scene,” “Living In the Sky with Diamonds” and the title track attest to this.

That said, the band proves itself a brave-enough bunch in that they don’t allow themselves to be tied to one dimension. Cobra Starship experiments, production-wise.

They have a bit of rock going in “You’re not In on the Joke” featuring Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump. In another, its hip-hop namely “The World will never Do” with rapper B.O.B laying down verses.

“Messy” for some, but “hot” for most, Cobra Starship’s winning formula makes for a truly interesting affair with or without Leighton.

Andy Bockelman: Appropriateness of 'New Moon' wanes

Andy Bockelman

Andy Bockelman’s movie reviews appear in the Craig Daily Press and Saturday Morning Press.

‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’

Rating: ★★

Length: 130 minutes

Starring: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. now playing at the West Theater.

Who could forget their senior year of high school? with the friendships, the prospect of the future, the love triangle with two different creatures of the night …

Or was that last example just in “New Moon?”

Teenager Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is finding that dating a vampire can be quite an ordeal. Aside from being 90 years younger than her lover, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), there’s always the inherent danger of spending time with his family, certain members of which aren’t as warm to her as her sweetie is.

But as long as Edward is around, she feels perfectly safe — which makes it all the more difficult when he breaks up with her, claiming that they won’t work as a couple because of their different lives. Wallowing in anguish for months after Edward’s departure from the town of Forks, Bella’s malaise finally begins to lift as she spends more time with good friend Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), who has serious feelings of his own for her.

While the pain from her break-up prevents her from being close with him, she still can’t help but feel love for him. but Jacob has a secret of his own: His Native American tribe, the Quileute, is comprised of a group of shape-shifting warriors who protect the area from malevolent vampires.

And although he is sworn not to harm Edward or his family, Jacob’s protectiveness of Bella may just get a little hairy.

It’s hard to tell if it’s Bella’s characterization or Stewart’s portrayal that makes her so off-putting, but it’s a bit too much to swallow that this is supposed to be a girl who becomes the ultimate object of desire of both a vampire and a werewolf. It’s not so much the dense lines that she has to utter, it’s the fact that a young actress as talented as Stewart can’t make it work in spite of these faults.

The same goes for Pattinson, though he’s clearly there — in a notably smaller capacity than in “Twilight” — just to look pretty and shiny.

And he has some real competition, with Lautner excelling as lycanthropic lothario Jacob, trimming his tresses and bulking up considerably from his last appearance. How fortunate for the girls in the audience he spends most of his time running around in shorts and high tops while on screen, but at least he comes off as realistic in addition to being hunky.

Much of the supporting cast founders with uninspired roles, although among the standouts: Ashley Greene as Edward’s sprightly, clairvoyant sister Alice; Michael Sheen — reversing his werewolf affiliation from the other big vampire/werewolf civil war series “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” — as Aro, leader of the vampire aristocracy, the Volturi; and as his malicious guard Jane, Dakota Fanning, who looks at least a decade older with crimson contact lenses.

Maybe you have to be Fanning’s age to truly appreciate the “Twilight” movies and the Stephenie Meyer books upon which they’re based, but there are admittedly some improvements to be seen in this sequel.

Besides Lautner’s move into the spotlight and a much more biting sense of humor all around, there is a much clearer use of imagery at hand, such as the dreamscape of the Washington forests representing Bella’s recurring insomnia and the confusion and uncertainty about her life. The whole tone of the movie feels more dream-like, but even the best dream can turn into a nightmare.

And this isn’t the best dream, by far.

Forgetting — not forgiving — the lackadaisical story flow, there’s something very upsetting about Bella and Edward’s drastically desperate “I don’t want to live without you” outlook, a perverse twist on “Romeo & Juliet” that misses the point of everlasting love entirely. it manifests itself even worse with her as she loses her whole sense of self and becomes borderline suicidal.

It wouldn’t be as much of a concern if the “Twilight” franchise hadn’t already become such an entity unto itself. The “Team Edward” and “Team Jacob” T-shirts and buttons alone make it seem like a religion with numerous denominations.

Of course, the topper of “New Moon” is a smug, James Bond-esque, post-credits reminder that the forthcoming “Eclipse” will be released in 2010.

As if the legions of fans and 24-hour media coverage would let us forget.

Now playing at the West Theater.

Taylor Lautner in Rolling Stone on 'New Moon' Wolf Actor does iconic magazine …

“New Moon,” the second film in the “Twilight” saga, opened this weekend in most theaters around the world and even managed to top expectations, becoming the third biggest opener ever in the history of film. The latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine brings Taylor Lautner on the cover, together with an interview that offers a look behind the scenes, into what playing a wolf is all about. as fans already know by now, Lautner plays Jacob Black in the “Twilight” franchise, one of Bella Swan’s (Kristen Stewart) best friends ever since childhood. The second film sees him learning about his dual nature, as well as about his mission on earth. In other words, Jake is a wolf that, with the help of the Wolf Pack, must keep vampires from harming the good people of the town. as such, he immediately becomes Edward Cullen’s (Robert Pattinson) enemy.

But Jacob is also in love with Bella and there are key points in the film where she too seems to reciprocate. “Because she’s different, meaning she’s more of the plain Jane type,” Taylor says of Bella’s appeal. “You know, she’s not fake. I know that attracts me too. just somebody who is down to earth and themselves. I mean, apparently Edward likes her smell. But Jacob’s relationship with her is – Jacob has just always liked her. they used to be friends because their fathers are best friends. And he’s just always had a crush on her since he was a kid. Now they are getting to that stage where things can start,” the actor further says.

As for some fans being of the opinion that Jacob is actually interfering in between Bella and her one true love Edward, the actor explains that there are two sides to ever coin. Granted, the two characters (the men, that is) are completely different and it’s precisely because of this that Bella gets to love them both to different extents. On one hand, Edward is all serious and dramatic, while on the other, she can have fun with Jacob. there is no doubt that Bella would always – and should – choose Edward, but that’s not to say that she doesn’t love Jake too, Taylor adds.

However, even for a guy like Jake, this could get too tiresome at one point, Lautner agrees. “If I was Jacob, and I feel like I have lived as him, it gets so annoying. Because she’s in the car with you one moment, about ready to kiss you and then she leaves and is with Edward. And then she’s back with you, you know,” the actor explains in the same interview for the mag.

Ashley Greene, star of the runaway hit movie “Twilight Saga: new Moon”, thinks that her character, Alice Cullen, would have a better sex life than her. Ashley recently commented, “Take the best sex you’ve ever had in your life, multiply it by 100 and that’s vampire sex. I love absolutely love Alice, my character. She’s sweet, sexy and a killer. I feel if I was in a real fight, I’d get my a*s kicked.” the lovely miss Greene also talked of how she had to stay calm when she got the part in the “Twilight” movies when she said, “Oh, my God, I wanted this part so badly. so when they told me I got it, I tried to play it all cool, you know, for about a minute.” Ashley is a big fan of action movies and admits that she would like to be in another famous action movie series. She recently told Maxim magazine, “I want to hit up James Bond. that would be awesome.” Ashley Greene is riding the huge popularity of the film “Twilight Saga: new Moon” and is rumored to be dating Jared Followill of the band “The Kings of Leon”.

'New Moon': Why its girl-driven success is good for the future of movies

Offhand, it would be hard to think of a pop phenomenon as rapturously beloved as the Twilight saga that is also as vociferously hated. My God, the hate! If swoony-gauzy teen-bloodsucker romanticism with a golden-eyed indie-rock James Dean as love object isn’t your cup of passion, then fine — so be it. but why the frothing torrents of resentment? I was seriously shocked, for instance, reading some of the comments on Lisa’s recent post, to see that this much stone-pelting hostility could be directed at an actress as lovely and expressive as Kristen Stewart. What is her crime? having a personality moody and brainy and distinctive enough that it carries over, maybe a bit too much, from one role to the next? (That was true, as well, of the young Jane Fonda, whom Stewart often recalls.) It makes me wonder what, deep down, is getting the haters so flea-bitten scratchy under the collar.

Frankly, I think it’s this: The ascendance of the Twilight saga represents an essential paradigm shift in youth-gender control of the pop marketplace. For the better part of two decades, teenage boys, and overgrown teenage boys, have essentially held sway over Hollywood, dictating, to a gargantuan degree, the varieties of movies that get made. Explosive truck-smashing action and grisly machete-wielding horror, inflated superhero fantasy and knockabout road-trip comedy: It has been, at heart, a boys’ pig-out, a playpen of testosterone at the megaplex. sure, we have “chick flicks,” but that (demeaning) term implies that they’re an exception, a side course in the great popcorn smorgasboard.

No more. with New Moon, the Twilight series is now officially as sweeping a juggernaut on the big screen as it ever was between book covers. And that gives the core audience it represents — teenage girls — a new power and prevalence. Inevitably, such evolutions in clout are accompanied by a resentful counter-reaction. For if power is gained, then somewhere else (hello, young men!) it must be lost. yet such is the populist magic of Hollywood that these movies can’t simply be written off as some overblown high-school vampire version of a Miley Cyrus concert. or, more to the point, they can be (hello, haters!), but that completely misses what’s going on in them.

I went into New Moon having not read the book, and so I didn’t really experience the movie as an adaptation, or watch it as any sort of Twilight die-hard. Leaving aside a few leaping boy-to-wolf transformations (which could, at this point, have come out of any routine horror film), what I saw, in essence, was a moody romantic melodrama from the 1950s, a movie that told its story, more than anything else, with faces. For two hours, they loomed up there — Stewart, with her pale crystalline severity, her ability to communicate desire and distress at the same moment; Robert Pattinson, with his sweet-but-not-too-safe, hurtin’-eyed, chalky-skinned delinquent chivalry; and Taylor Lautner, with those naturally wolfy features, as the group’s Troy Donahue, a friendly, quick-grinned stud-muffin who’s just buff enough to divert the heroine without threatening to capsize her devotion to her true love.

The key to New Moon’s appeal, of course, is that a lack of consummation is built into the movie’s very premise, and so the sexiness, as it was in the ’50s, has to emerge almost entirely from the atmosphere, and from the interplay of those faces. And that, more than anything, is what makes this a picture dominated, in spirit, by a new kind of girl power. Mock me all you want (and from the haters, I expect nothing less), but the reason I believe that the big-screen success of the Twilight saga bodes well for the future of Hollywood movies is that the teenage girls who are lining up to see New Moon are asserting, in an almost innocent way, their allegiance to a much older form of pop moviemaking: the narcotic potency of mood, story, and romantic suggestion over the constant visual wham-pow! of action, effects, and packaged sensation. It’s not that New Moon has none of that stuff. It’s that the movie uses fantasy to liberate, rather than to steamroll, its emotions. That’s what makes it a new-style, feminine-driven brand of popcorn, one that’s more than welcome at a moment when the other kind — the boys’ kind — has grown more than a bit stale.
