Standoff man faces nine more charges

The Belmont man who allegedly raped, beat and choked a 14-year-old last Wednesday faces nine additional felony charges of five counts of felonious aggravated sexual assault, two counts of possession of child pornography and two counts of manufacturing child pornography.

Judge Kenneth McHugh ordered Shayne Chase, 44, of 96 Scenic Drive in Belmont, held on $50,000 cash bail during his appearance in Laconia District Court Monday afternoon.

This is the second time in a week Chase has appeared in Laconia District Court.

On Friday, he entered no pleas to two counts of felonious sexual assault and pleaded innocent to one misdemeanor count of resisting arrest and one misdemeanor count of simple assault after Belmont Police, along with members of the Belknap Regional Special Operation Unit, surrounded Chase’s trailer the night before and pelted it with tear gas for four hours until Chase surrendered.

About 60 residents of the mobile home park were evacuated beginning at about 8 p.m. Chase was in custody by midnight.

The newest charges stem from the continuing investigation by Belmont police, Police Chief Vincent Baiocchetti said in a statement released to news media Monday morning.

During Chase’s appearance in court last Friday, Belmont Prosecutor Lt. David Estes said he watched a taped account of the interview of the alleged victim, who said Chase had called her before he allegedly raped her and told her he was “seriously considering killing her and throwing her body in the river.”

Copies of the most recent charges and their corresponding affidavits were unavailable at the close of court business Monday afternoon. But Clerk Diane Lane said they would be available this morning.

Chase is scheduled for a probable cause hearing for 11 felony charges and two misdemeanor charges of simple assault and resisting arrest on Monday morning. McHugh has set aside two hours for the proceedings.

Baiocchetti said the investigation is continuing and asked anyone with any additional information to contact Detective Raechel Moulton at 267-8351.
