Being made gravity’s bitch is always a humbling experience. when it happens in front of an audience of millions, the embarrassment is increased exponentially.
Still, some handle the stumbles and missteps that life doles out better than others. YouTube sensation Justin Bieber and former Fly Girl Jennifer Lopez both took very public spills this week, at Wembley Arena in London and on the American Music Awards respectively, and each handled their falls from grace in their own ways.
But who handled the spills better? To determine that, let’s apply the recently reconfigured Olympic scoring system for gymnastics. Panel a will judge the requirements, difficulty and connections of the routines, adding points from a base score of zero. Panel B will judge the actual execution, starting with a base score of 10 and deducting accordingly.
Let’s start with Lopez, who took a pretty dramatic spill at the American Music Awards on Sunday:
Panel a: Major points for requirements and difficulty, as her routine involved climbing atop a backup dancer’s back and taking a leap, all while wearing inappropriate footwear for the routine (the task would have been considerably easier, for instance, if she had been wearing cleated hiking boots).
Panel a score: 9.5
Panel B: Note Lopez’s flawless bounce-back from the tumble, using her ample derriere to literally launch herself back into her dance routine. however, major execution points deducted for later blaming her dancers for the spill.
Panel B score: 4.7
Overall score: 14.2
Now on to Justin Bieber, who actually broke his foot while performing an opening set for Taylor Swift at Wembley Arena on Monday:
Panel a: Minimal points awarded for requirement and difficulty, as the Bieb’s only requirements were to gallop to the foot of the stage.
Panel a score: 2.0
Panel B score: Execution is divided. On one hand, the exact misstep occurred at a point (at about the 0:15 mark) that provided a minimum of showmanship. however, the fact that he completed the song “One Time” with a broken foot ups his score considerably, off-key caterwauling notwithstanding.
Panel B score: 8.3
Overall score: 10.3
The winner: Jennifer Lopez. but take heart, Justin; your career’s still young and there’s ample room for improvement.
Now let’s take a look at other examples of stage-fall history, judging by the same criteria.
Beyonce eats it in Orlando:
Panel a score: 5.6
Panel B score: 8.7
Overall score: 14.3
Jimmy Fallon’s auto-tuned spill at the 2009 Emmys:
Panel a score: 6.2
Panel B score: 9.1
Overall score: 15.3
Joe Jonas‘ trampoline tumble (at the 3.05 mark):
Panel a score: 5.8Panel B score: 7.0
Overall score: 12.8
Madonna’s Lisbon slip (at 0:47):
Panel a score: 2.5
Panel B score: 4.3
Overall score: 6.8

For all those “New Moon” fanatics who will be hitting up tonight’s midnight screenings, your long wait is officially winding down. if you plan on catching a show tonight in L.a. you might want to keep your eyes akimbo for one of the stars of the film. Tinsel Korey, who plays Emily Young, dropped this news to her West Coast followers, “So excited! Midnight tonight. you might see me pop up at a random theatre in L.a. Look for the motorcycle and chucks
”. Of course, some of the “Twilight” saga’s fans are new to the scene and will be checking out the movie a little later in the weekend, like “Cory in the House” actress Madison Pettis, who tweeted, “Watched Twilight (part 1) on dvd last night–LOVED IT!! Can’t wait to go see New Moon on Saturday!!”
We know one person who won’t be able to make it out to theaters this weekend is poor Jordin Sparks (pictured)! The “American Idol” songstress spread the word today via her Twitter that she, “Was struck w/ acute appendicitis…took out that appendix last night. Recovering today & the next week or so.” while Jordin takes it easy (get well soon!), it looks like Justin Bieber is feeling more than sprightly post-sickness, tweeting, “About to go on @itsonalexa on MTV!! Why do I always go on mtv the day after I’m sick. Haha. this is gonna be fun. She wants me. Haha. Jk”

Eleven-year-old Sarah Horbacewicz was just another sixth grade student at Tenafly Middle School, until recently. she got her break as Time for Kids (TFK) magazine’s Kid Reporter.
Last year, Horbacewicz and one other student in her fifth grade class at Stillman School applied for the TFK reporter talent search, after a recommendation from their teacher. she was also up against thousands of children – under the age of 13 – nationwide. TFK chose a group of 12 talented students all across the nation for the 2009-2010 school year as their TFK reporters.
To apply, applicants had to include two reports and a video about themselves. for Horbacewicz’s first story, she wrote about “Walk to School Wednesdays,” which encourages everyone to walk to school to promote a more “green” and healthy lifestyle. her second story was based on a hometown hero, where she wrote about the organizers of Camp Haze – a camp for children who have lost their parents to an illness or in a tragedy such as 9/11.
Horbacewicz said, “I feel really proud of myself…for doing all that.” her first encounter with celebrities was back in September when she interviewed teen pop singer Justin Bieber, American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, band Honor Society and comedian will Ferrell on Arthur Ashe Kid’s Day at the U.S. Open.
Horbacewicz said she thinks up interview questions herself before getting them approved by TFK editors and asking them publicly.
She spoke about her first time meeting the celebrities and how she prepared.
“The night before, we looked up information and researched Justin Bieber – because I didn’t really know him yet – and reviewed my interview questions,” Horbacewicz said. “I was kind of nervous because we had to tape record it [the interview] and stuff, even though we researched the night before and I knew my questions.”
Horbacewicz collects her thoughts in order to remain professional.
“I try to calm myself down so they don’t know I’m nervous before I interview them,” she giggled.
Though she’s already racking up her list of pop icons and celebrities, Horbacewicz is becoming a local celebrity in her own right. but first she had to prove it to those she knew.
“After I became one [a TFK reporter], no one believed me until I wore the TFK badge and shirt and then they finally believed me,” she said. “And then I also got a free subscription to TFK and my Social Studies teacher printed out my story and showed them [peers] my story with will Ferrell and Justin Bieber. I felt famous because people kept coming up to me and said, ‘Wow!’”
Horbacewicz’s next assignment is to interview Jeff Corwin, who explores animal life and the outdoors. she said she’s really excited because now she can read his book and interview him about it. she also commented that he inspires her because she “wants to be green.”
Her all-time dream assignment would be landing an interview with her idol Miley Cyrus.
Reporting is definitely in Horbacewicz’s career horizon. but for now, she’s just a kid who likes to draw, paint, play sports and snowboard with a glamorous side job.

Justin Bieber has already conquered the Internet, pop radio and MTV. This morning — with the support of his army of fans — Bieber made his morning television debut on NBC’s “Today.” The 15-year-old, very-pint-sized sensation played his two singles, “One Time” and “One Less Lonely Girl,” along with an acoustic rendition of a crowd favorite, “Favorite Girl.” Always gracious, Bieber did his best to meet as many fans as possible, many of whom took advantage of the lack of school today to line up for the show on Sunday night.
“He has the voice of an angel!” said a fan who, along with her friend (and a patient parent — a common accessory in the crowd) saw him perform for the first and second times, respectively. Another pair of girls next to them excitedly held up signs they made for their favorite singer. “I wrote ‘Justin 4 President,’” one girl explained. “He should so be president.”
Another group of girls displayed their love for Bieber in another way: With books. Having arrived last night after a trip to the mall to pick up matching purple American Apparel hoodies (the same one Bieber sports in his video for “One Time”), the girls brought books with them. “He asked us to bring the books for kids who can’t have them,” at an event last Thursday. “We brought them for a good cause, and because he asked us to!”
But some other audience members weren’t feeling as altruistic. “We got into a lot of fights to get to the front,” said a group of high school students. Many of the “Today” staffers and security guards can attest to barricades nearly being broken with the amount of enthusiastic fans. And with two songs storming the charts and an album out in a little over a month, it doesn’t look like those fans are going anywhere any time soon.
