NEWINGTON — Twenty-nine hours before the Black Friday 5 a.m. opening of Best buy, Jeff Conrad pitched a tent outside the store’s front door to wait for the sales.
The Exeter resident struck camp before midnight Wednesday and by Thursday afternoon, there were four more tents in line behind him. most planned to buy computers.
Eric Pokorski drove from Lee, forgot his tent and rather than drive back home and risk losing his place in line, he went to a nearby K-Mart and bought a replacement tent for $54.
“My computer just went,” he explained.
Spend Thanksgiving day and night in his new tent on a sidewalk in front of Best buy, wait for the dawn opening, and buy a new computer that normally lists for $594, for the Black Friday price of $197.
Kira St. Hilaire arrived at the store about midnight Wednesday and spent most of Thanksgiving on a bench seat removed from a mini van and transplanted onto the store sidewalk.
“I love an adventure,” said St. Hilaire, who planned to buy a discounted laptop. “I come early to make sure I get what I came for.”
Tim Morin of Salisbury, Mass., had a two-word answer to a question asking why he’d sleep in front of a store on Thanksgiving.
“Flat screen,” he said.
Camping third in line, an Indonesian family that speaks little English communicated their motive for spending a drizzly night in a tent in front of an electronics store.
“Laptops. Cameras,” said the matriarch.
Debbie and Michael Zabkar of Milton arrived at noon on Thanksgiving with their 14-year-old son, Zach. They’re Black Friday veterans, having previously camped at stores overnight about a half-dozen times, twice in the rain.
“We have triplets — five children that are home schooled — so this lets us get the great deals and be able to give the children things they wouldn’t normally be able to get,” said Debbie.
This year they’re shopping for computers, while Zach has his eye on a video game system. Dinner plans called for drive-through fast food, and the family planned to have Thanksgiving dinner a day late.
While Debbie Zabkar predicted order for the 5 a.m. store opening, Conrad was less optimistic. with a hand-held camera, he shot video of his fellow campers, a steady flow of cars that drove past to see why there were tents in front of the store and local police officers who had the same question.
“I think there’s going to be some fights,” said Conrad, who promised to film any Black Friday-Best buy scuffles and post them to YouTube.
